Mums-to-be in Yemen’s Wadil Adil used to travel five hours to the nearest midwife. Not ideal when you’re heavily pregnant. But gifts like this one have changed all that. Oxfam Unwrapped-trained midwives now visit the village regularly. Bringing midwife care much closer to home.
One trainee Oxfam Unwrapped midwife says: “My father encouraged me to come to this centre to be trained… When I started to see other girls get involved in the training, it encouraged me to go. Three other girls attend this course from my community.”
“If I were not here, I would be finishing high school and waiting to get married. I think that it is better that I am receiving this training as the community are happy that they will be able to receive help from me, from the skills that I am learning here. By attending this course, I too have encouraged other girls to come here and to learn new skills so that they too can help their community.”
“My community really need healthcare and education. When I get married, I would like to continue my work here, I will make sure that the person that I marry will understand what I do, what I need to do.”
