This gift in action
Families in five communities in Copan, Honduras, all received a gift. It was moosic to their ears. Oxfam Unwrapped likes to help people forge new careers, and these farming families were all given pregnant young cows to care for, plus training and veterinary support – meaning Daisy and co will happily help their families in return.
An exciting Oxfam Unwrapped project worked with different community members in different ways, with the common aim of lifting the villagers out of poverty. Initiatives included establishing local credit unions, an educational programme, better use of local farmers’ markets and giving agricultural land to the landless. Five families were selected to receive a cow.
In this project, the cow as either pregnant, or ‘with calf’, a bovine package that with careful management and the right level of support and training can provide a family with a livelihood.
The lucky families had to build somewhere for their new family members to live, provide them with enough grass to graze and somewhere to eat and sleep. From now on, the cows and calves would be paying back their host families tenfold, with milk, fertiliser, and even more extra calves.
