This gift in action

In western Honduras there’s an innovative Oxfam project underway designed to help families grow enough to feed themselves while protecting the environment around them. An offshoot of Oxfam’s activity is also helping to supply people with the raw materials and simple technology enabling them to generate their own energy. Housewife, farmer and mum-of-three, Ofelia Quintanilla is one of those benefiting from the free energy and more which this project delivers. Oxfam biodigesters such as Ofelia’s employ an ultra-effective biological process which supplies her market garden with compost and provides the family kitchen with instant, clean energy. And the fuel to power the biodigester couldn’t be more handy coming from vegetable waste and Ofelia’s cow, Preciosa: “She gives us a lot of benefits, apart from milk. We use the manure to help produce the gas we use to cook with.” This is more environment friendly too, cutting out the need for traditional stoves so reducing the amount of wood that is burned. The biodigester also supplies Ofelia’s market garden with compost enabling her to grow a range of crops including plantains, sweet potatoes, yucca and a variety of fruit to feed her family, her animals or to sell at the market to buy other necessities such as cooking oil and soap.
