Food boost

This gift in action

Life isn’t easy for poor farmers in south-west Bangladesh. Cyclones, tidal surges, flooding regularly threaten crops and homes. But, in Satkhira and Jessore districts, Oxfam has been helping communities establish an innovative technique which can help farmers keep their crops safe, and even use the flood waters to improve their harvests. Floating gardens are rafts created using water hyacinth on an eight metre by one metre bamboo frame. This is covered with soil and manure and then planted with vegetables. This environment-friendly, land-less cultivation can turn wetlands into viable agricultural areas. And although a new raft needs to be built every year, materials from the old ones can be used as fertiliser during the dry season. As the rafts can be moved from place to place they are also ideal for those that have lost their homes and fields. While in seasonally flooded areas, the beds can be spread over the soil as the water withdraws, so winter crops can be grown on this soil without further tillage or fertiliser. But the biggest benefit of these floating gardens is that they provide food year round. And as the rafts have been used to grow almost 30 different types of vegetables and spices, a family can have a more varied diet and any surplus can be sold at market.
