This gift in action

Around 90 per cent of people in Rwanda are employed in small-scale farming, especially women, who generally undertake the lowest paid, labour intensive work. Oxfam is working to improve farmers’ livelihoods and support enterprise, confidence, and leadership amongst women, improving their status at home and in the community. This includes training more than 1,500 women in mushroom cultivation, a new and profitable crop, which creates jobs and improves living standards. We work with private sector partners including producers who sell mushroom tubes to local women. Mushrooms are extremely fast growing - just 10 days between planting and harvest - need little land or labour, and sell for good prices. Growers can sell their crop locally or back to the producers who can supply in bulk to restaurants and hotels. Mushrooms have changed Josephine Nishimwe’s life: “After ten days I know I’ll have some money. At first I just wanted enough to buy food and pay my children’s school fees but now I’m looking to a future where I have my own business supplying others.” We have also provided growers with small solar driers enabling them to make dried and powdered mushrooms to sell in both domestic and export markets.
