Give girls a head start

Leyla used to have to sit on the floor in class. We help girls go up in the world in so many ways. In 2007, an Oxfam project in Gao, Mali, helped over 5,000 children in 20 rural schools by providing equipment and guidance to local authorities. Education Assistant Balkissa Alasssane sees the benefit in focusing on girls’ education: “I help parents to see that to educate a girl is to educate an entire nation. I want to see girls doing something with their minds. A few years ago we had two classes and 18 students. Today there are 238 students in our local school and over half are girls.”
