Thanks to Oxfam Unwrapped, Marta in Honduras knows her onions. With training from Oxfam Unwrapped, plus seeds and tools, she now has the skills and equipment to grow vegetables to keep her family happy and healthy.

An ambitious project set out to support families in mountainous areas in western Honduras to establish gardens, improving their diet and their income.

Oxfam Unwrapped trained 200 people to become ‘farmer-to-farmer’ trainers. They learned about organic fertilisers, how to get the best yield from their soil using special preservation and ploughing techniques, and ‘mountain slope sustainable agriculture’.

These students then went on to train another 2,000 farmers in their communities.

Having planted the seed of self-sufficiency, Oxfam unwrapped also helped the businesses grow by providing vegetable seeds, including tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beets, cabbage, broccoli, and green beans, and all the materials the farmers needed to grow yam, sweet potatoes and bananas. Well over 10,000 people are now looking forward to seeing the fruits of their labours mature and deliver a brighter farming future.

Marta says: “Now my children don’t want for vegetables. We just pick whatever we need.” See how farmer training has made a big difference in Honduras by clicking the video link above.
