Water on tap

This gift in action

For Sanen and his wife Rohayah, growing enough to eat used to be a struggle – particularly during dry seasons. But thanks to Oxfam, they now have a working irrigation system which means there’s water all year round, and fruit and vegetables in their fields. Oxfam is working with farmers like Sanen and Rohayah across Tunda, an island three hours away from the mainland of Java in Indonesia. Oxfam has been teaching the farmers simple techniques which help to improve their harvests including: how to make organic fertiliser, advice on different types of crops to plant, and how to make and use simple irrigation systems. “We used to have to carry the water from our well to the fields,” Sanen explains. “As a result we couldn’t cultivate much land.” “Since the Oxfam programme started they have helped us with a water pump, water storage, and pipes to irrigate the field, allowing us to plant out all the areas we need. They also taught us how to make and use the irrigation methods. This allows us to get the water directly from our wells to the field more easily.” Now the family grow corn, cucumbers, chillies, soy beans, long beans and water melons. And thanks to Oxfam training and having water on tap, many farmers are now able to harvest three times a year when previously they were only having two.
