Girl power

This gift in action

It’s estimated that 60% of people in Sindh province, Pakistan, have no land of their own while large areas of farmland are owned by small, wealthy and politically influential elites. A position made even worse since the country’s devastating floods in 2010 and 2011. However, in the first scheme of its kind in South Asia, the Sindh provincial government introduced a land re-distribution programme to help landless women escape poverty. One of those to benefit was Aasi Mallah. She and her family were awarded four acres of land under the scheme. But her joy was short-lived as villagers who disputed her claim evicted her. Oxfam stepped in to help her and other women in the province who had experienced similar problems to pursue their cases by providing legal support and representation. More broadly we’re also helping to spread awareness of land rights among poorer farming communities, to turn more women into landowners and enable women to make the most of their opportunities.
