This gift in action

Lulu Works Trust is a small business that takes its name from a variety of shea nut which – with support from Oxfam – is helping to change women’s lives in South Sudan. Traditionally, used as food, lulu nuts also produce pure shea butter, and it’s this that forms the basis of the Lulu’s product range. And it’s a range that is generating a growing income for women in the Mundri area of South Sudan. Oxfam has been supporting this limited company for several years, helping to supply equipment such as Lulu’s ‘solar tunnel’ drying facility and training in business skills. And as Milly Gabriel, County co-ordinator for Lulu, explains they had success in mind from the outset: “When we started the project, we looked for people from the community to work with us. We were looking for people who were hard working and business oriented. Lulu is a business oriented activity. Our goal is to make money for everyone.” Today Lulu’s range of products includes body butter, hair cream, mosquito repellent, lip balm, soap and cooking oil. “We sell the products here, in Juba and in overseas markets; women in Kenya sell it; and in the US too, as a former donor has a connection there.” In addition, Oxfam has plans to potentially buy soap from Lulu for use in future hygiene and sanitation projects.
