A Corsham Boyhood: the Diary of Herbert Spackman 1877-1891

£9.99

About this item

This represents the first thirteen years of a diary started purely as shorthand practice when the writer was twelve, and continued almost till his death in 1949. It was eventually transcribed and edited by his daughter. Although these chapters end when, just engaged to be married, he emigrates to New Zealand, they are 'boyhood' throughout, partly in the company of younger members of the family, but chiefly by reason of a childlike delight in such simple pleasures as swimming in 'the Weavfern': skating on 'the pond', going round for orders with horse and trap, listening to a temperance lecture or a penny reading, making a catapult or an Aeolian harp, walking to Bath to hear a 'capital' concert or, especially and always, making music. Even the contrivance and effort they demanded he 'enjoyed' (his favourite word), and it is this that will endear him to a wider circle than those who know him.

Illustrations by Robin Tanner, the diarist's son-in-law, enhance the text, with photographs, many taken by Herbert himself.

There is minor wear to the cover but the book is otherwise in very good condition.
