Alice Through the Pillar-Box

£19.99

Product description

Lewis Carroll's classic tale of Alice and her adventures has been lampooned and re-told in various ways since it first appeared, its oddities lending themselves to such treatment by a variety of authors. An early 'imitation' was 'Clara in Blunderland' (a political parody by Caroline Lewis - 1902), but our book has a less serious aim, simply re-telling the original tale with the addition of the Tenniel illustrations depicted as postage stamps, with accompanying descriptions of these. It was produced to mark the centenary of 'Wonderland"'s original publication in 1865. A curiosity which will appeal to a philatelist...

Gerald M King is known as a producer of fantasy stamps, the Postage Stamps of Wonderland having been produced these in response to the lack of any official stamps from the Post Office to commemorate the centenary of the first publication of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. They were originally definitive stamps based on Queen Victoria issues and depicting her as Queen of Wonderland but commemorative stamps soon followed. His covers are the best and have suitably authentic-looking postmarks. Other series also exist.

Our copy of the book is in generally good condition, with a good (clipped) dust jacket which is only slightly grubby. The book itself is bound in navy cloth with title etc in gilt lettering on the spine, and shows no signs of wear or use externally. Inside, the binding is firm, and all pages clean and bright. All pages are lined as graph paper, as being appropriate for the display of stamps. There is an ink-written gift inscription on the front fep.
