Andre Kertesz: Sixty Years of Photography

£15.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

The pioneer of candid photography and subjective reportage, Andre Kertesz first recognised the potential of the camera for capturing life and form as early as 1912, and is now widely regarded as one of the great photographers of all time. He once said that 'photography should be realistic', yet the more than two hundred photographs reproduced here prove - if proof were needed - just how fantastic and how surreal reality can be. With fine perception and great gentleness he presents a remarkable chronicle of twentieth-century life and culture: the irreplaceable pictures of his native Hungary during the First World War; the famous photographs of his Paris period during the twenties and thirties, including several of the once notorious 'distortions' scenes of Paris night life, and the well-known Mondrian staircase. There are portraits of his friends, the leaders of the city's artistic life; surprising views of America, spanning a period of more than thirty years; and his impressions of other countries from Spain to Japan, including Hungary re-visited in 1971. Superbly reproduced, these photographs, in all their variety, testify to the genius and vision of one of the unquestioned masters of photographic art.
