This gift in action
The village of Kordakhan in a remote area of Afghanistan now has its own bakery, thanks to some enterprising women and a little dough from Oxfam. A small amount of capital and the energies of 20 local women, including Khujehbigom – pictured here decorating the cookies – have built a co-operative baking business.
The team produce around 70 kilograms of cookies daily which they sell at the local bazaar or market. Everyone does a different job each day – mixing the dough, rolling it, cutting cookies - but one of the women, Karima, always minds the ovens.
This is the first time that many of the women have ever worked and they are proud of what they do. They are energetic and motivated to improve their lives, and want to do more and more. Many want to learn to read and write to help them do the bookwork for the business.
Today, the bakery is turning a small profit, as money is being ploughed back to buy ingredients to attract more customers.
Oxfam’s Malalai Momand, who helped set up the bakery, says: “I find the project really inspiring. It’s fantastic to see the energy of the women. They are really enjoying running the business and as it expands the money they are making will make a real difference to their families’ income.”
