Common Misquotations collected by Hesketh Pearson

£15.00

Product description

1934 first edition, published by Hamish Hamilton. Green cloth board covers with black lettering on front and spine. Ex Libris label inside front cover. Handwritten addendum on frontispiece by Hesketh Pearson, dated Dec 1937. Inside pages are age-yellowed but (apart from p.53) are clean. Binding is secure.

In this short but fascinating book, the actor and biographer, Hesketh Pearson, lists common misquotations alongside the correct originals together with their sources. For instance, 'cool as a cucumber' actually first appeared as 'as cold as cucumbers', in the play "Cupid's Revenge" by Beaumont & Fletcher. There are 68 pages of similar examples to enjoy.

This book is a pedant's dream! It also appears to be quite rare so collectors may want to snap it up. Finding another copy may be like looking for a needle in a haystack... or should that be 'a needle in a bottle of hay'?
