Finland At Peace & War

£14.99

Product description

The first edition of this book was published in 1993 to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of Finland's independence from Russia. The Finns faced four wars in the first twenty-eight years of their freedom. In 1918 they fought to secure their independence, when occupying Russian Bolshevik troops and Finnish revolutionaries sought to overthrow the newly established order. The second and third encounters were against the Soviet Union in 1939-40 and again in 1941-4. Finally, under Stalin's armistice terms, they were required to hasten the German Army's withdrawal from Lapland in the autumn of 1944.
Neutrality is the stance of independent Finland, which has been maintained since 1945 by a skilful balance of foreign policy and defence preparedness. The former holds the prime position, but there is no place for appeasement in the Finnish character - even though her government and people are acutely concious of their situation at a point where western and eastern cultures meet in northern Europe.
