Histoire et Histoires de Sceaux

£24.99

Product description

The Château de Sceaux, a grand country house in Sceaux, not far from Paris, France, sits in a park laid out by André Le Nôtre. The original château was built for Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's Minister of Finance, in 1670. The present château dates from the Second Empire. The property was confiscated in the French Revolution and its contents sold for the benefit of the nation. Today it houses the Musée de l’Île-de-France, a museum of local history, including one of the largest collections of works by painters of the School of Paris.

This book, prefaced by an introduction by Georges Duhamel, tells the full story of the Chateau and its history illustrated by lovely B/W photographs. It is, however, unique in containing a signed inscription by the author to Lady Diana Mosley (nee Mitford) wife of Oswald Mosley. All text is in French.

The book is bound in grey cloth with dark blue titles to front and spine (all faded). All four corners and the head and foot of the spine are bumped and shelf-worn. It is also discoloured around the edges and has various stains on both the back and the front. There is some foxing on the inside of the front and back cover and on the front end page; beyond the front end page however, aside from a 0.5cm pen mark on the title page, the book is in very good condition. The ink written inscription is clear and legible, all pages are clean and bright and the binding is tight.
