Modigliani and His Models

£16.99

Product description

Modigliani is one of the best known yet least understood of the twentieth-century artists. His story is legendary - the handsome bohemian plagued by ill health whose dissolute life of alcohol, drugs and sex led to his premature death at the age of thirty-five. Yet in this brief time Modigliani succeeded in inventing a unique and instantly recognisable visual language.
Drawing on the latest scholarship, some of the foremost authorities on the artist consider the sensual nudes that caused such a sensation at the time and the portraits and figure paintings that reveal Modigliani's enduring fascination with the human form. The book looks at the wide range of influences on which he drew - from ancient Egyptian and classical Greek art, Renaissance painting, Cambodian and African sculpture, Jewish mysticism, Catholicism to French Post-Impressionism - as well as his extensive ties to England, a hitherto little-explored aspect of his short life.
By exploring the myth that surrounds the artist and examining his seductive yet highly disciplined output, this sumptuous book will contribute to a reassessment of Modigliani's position in the annals of early twentieth-century art.
