Mouchette 1st English Edition

£8.99

Product description

The story, narrated with simple directness, tells of how a little peasant girl, Mouchette, the scorned outcast of the village-for her family are down-and-out alcoholics-falls in with a poacher Arsene as she gets caught in a downpour returning home one evening from school. Arsene, an epileptic, is doubly an outcast, for he has (so he believes) killed a gamewarden in a drunken tussle. Mouchette, who has learnt a ferocious mistrust of her fellows, gravely accepts the confidence which Arsene places in her and becomes her accomplice. It is he who at last brings her face to face with her terrible solitude. How her sharpened need for warmth and human solidarity is disappointed and how her effort to escape from her solitude comes to naught-this is the theme of the story.

The book is in good condition and is a hardback with a sleeve.
