Hardback, bound in honey coloured full calf with gilt tooling on edges of both boards and spine; five raised bands and title in label on spine, crest of St. John's Training College, Battersea, in gilt on front board; end-papers and edges of text block heavily marbled; 12mo., [vi] 342 pp. Book condition: VG; slight fraying to top of spine and top corners bumped; presentation plate, dated 1911, on ffep, no other inscriptions; binding tight and pages clean. A series of essays by Grant Allen, Andrew Wilson, Thomas Foster, Edward Clodd and Richard A Proctor, originally published in the weekly journal Knowledge, and in book form in 1882.
