Pacifists In Action: The Experience of the Friends Ambulance Unit in the Second World War

£13.99

Product description

The Friends Ambulance Unit was formed in 1914 and re-established in 1939, providing an opportunity for over 1300 young men and women with pacifist convictions to undertake non-military service in the Second World War. Its members undertook hospital work and air-raid relief in Britain, and worked overseas in medical teams, sometimes alongside the military. They also provided civilian relief in twenty-five countries across the world including Finland, Ethiopia and China. The FAU continued to provide a Post-War and international Service until conscription finally ended in 1959.
This book draws on the direct experience of a wide range of members of the Unit who provided the author with an account of what they did and why they did it, together with an assessment and evaluation of their experience and its lasting effects upon their lives. These accounts are treated analytically within an historical context, and reveal significant lessons for the contemporary world.
The book will be of interest to historians, to all those concerned with war and peace and alternatives to violence, and to those who themselves served in the Friends Ambulance Unit or were associated with its work. It adds significantly to the literature on the social implications of Quakerism.
