The Impressions of Aureole

£150.00

Product description

This is an the only known signed copy of a series of fictional reminiscences, originally issued sequentially in 'The World' newspaper, but eventually published in one volume by Chatto & Windus in 1875. The author's voice, while very much of its period, is delightfully witty, amusing and rather akin to that of those immortal ladies Mapp and Lucia (E.F. Benson).
The author, Louise Berens (1849-1929), is known to have written only two other books, both subsequent to the 'Impressions'. This volume includes a hand-written dedication to 'Lambert Ward', thought to be the then 20-year old Sir Lambert Ward, who would perhaps have known her husband through their mutual Army connection.
The book itself is in reasonable condition for its age, with tight binding and an intact blue watered silk cover decorated with gilt flowers on front and spine. Gilt title and decoration on spine very worn but legible, and generally faded elsewhere. Pages show some foxing, and are clearly hand-cut. Free portion of fep is missing, and the fep is slightly torn at the bottom. As one would expect, there is some shelf wear, with all corners bumped and bent, and the top and bottom of the spine worn (but not damaged).
