In January of 1971 Howard Worley and Bill Poellot met for the first time and discovered, to their surprise, that each had been pursuing a longtime interest in the Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railway.
For the better part of 20 years Howard was busy on the Connelsville Division, gathering company documents, learning the inner workings of the railroad, and taking a few photographs here and there. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Bill and his father were prodigiously recording P&WV life through the lenses of their cameras. It was to be the classic case of two people working on the same idea at the same time, in close but separate locations, and then bumping into each other by chance.
In the late 1970 Bill answered Howard's advertisement in Railroad Magazine selling P&WV steam locomotive diagram books. An immediate friendship was forged, kindled by the love of the old single track coal hauling railroad. This association still continues almost 20 years later.
The blending of interests, kinship and talents was a natural evolution, producing this book. With Howard's writing and Bill's photographs, the Pittsburgh & West Virginia's path through history has been recorded for all to read, see and enjoy. It is the culmination of 40 years of work; a labor of love, and a tribute to the old High and Dry.
