The Portuguese Seaborne Empire 1418-1825

£65.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

The history of the Portuguese seaborne empire is in one way more interesting than that of any of its successors. For it was the Portuguese who pioneered the maritime expansion of Europe which, above all else, marks of the modern from the medieval world. The Spaniards, the Dutch, the English and the French, who followed in the wake of the Portuguese pioneers were inevitably influenced by many of their experiences, whether in their development of navigational techniques or in their attitudes to peoples of other faiths and other colours.

The first part of this book surveys the vicissitudes of the Portuguese empire in three continents during four centuries, and the second part discusses some of its typical characteristics. We meet the missionaries of the Church Militant ranging from the backwoods of Brazil to the court of Peking; the mariners who manned the India and the Brazil fleets; the soldiers who served in the Eastern forts and garrisons; the sugar-planters and the gold-miners of Brazil; the merchants, the monopolists, and the smugglers who were omnipresent from the Maranhao to Macao; the 'New Christians' and the Negro slaves and social outcasts. There is also some discussion as to what extent the Portuguese transplanted their existing social institutions to exotic environments, and how far they modified them overseas. Throughout, the author has kept constantly in view the interactions between the scattered settlements of the farthest-flung of empires and the home country poised precariously on the western rim of Europe.
