The Rise of Western Rationalism

£10.99

Product description

Western rationalism - its nature, course and genesis - was Max Weber's dominant historical interest. It was the grand theme of his two world historical studies, Economy and Society and The Economic Ethics of the World Religions. His studies of the relationships among economy, polity, law and religion are his lasting scholarly achievements.
In this book Wolfgang Schluchter presents the most systematic analysis and elaboration ever attempted of Weber's sociology as a developmental history of the West. Methodologically he is concerned with Weber's relation to evolutionism and neo-evolutionism, and substantively with the problem of historical rationalisation. Schluchter goes beyond Weber by systematising ethical, legal, political and economic stages of development. In particular he offers a novel treatment of Weber's famous "ethic of responsibility" as a normative theory. Drawing on the neo-evolutionary theories of Jurgen Habermas, Niklas Luhmann and Talcott Parsons, Schluchter argues for Weber's developmental history as a superior alternative. Schluchter's book offers an agenda for the advance of social theory in the 1980s at the same time that it promotes further historical inquiry.
