J. And R. Tonson in the Strand, London, 1767. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Very Good. Set of 8 volumes. In full leather binding with five raised bands to spines, in very good condition. Title on red leather grounds in second section, volume numbers in gilt in third section. Titles only present on volumes 8 and 6; numbering rubbed away on volume 8. Decorative gilt margins to boards front and back, with some rubbing. Some wear to leather along spine hinges and corners, but all boards still attached. A piece of leather missing missing on front board top right of Volume 3 (3 x 0.5 cm), and the back of volume 1 adjacent to spine (5 x 0.5 cm). All volumes slightly scuffed and worn. Text blocks in very good condition, a little age-darkened, notably on ffeps and pastedowns. Volume 8 has minor insect damage up to p. 203 at bottom. Previous owner's name inscribed in full on ffep to volume 4, dated 1773; some of the other volumes just have his name. Volume 1 has another owner's name in pencil, from a later period. Text includes head and tail pieces. Title pages illustrated with an oval portrait and each volume has a frontispiece by F. Hayman, engraved by C. Grignion, Charles Mosley, and F. Muller. The frontispieces have been cut out from Volumes 4 and 6. Each volume has an unpaginated index. Vol I starts with No. I, Thursday March I, 1710 - 1711. Last issue in Volume 8 is No. 635, Monday December 20. The set of 8 volumes weighs 2.5 kg, so may incur extra postage. Size: 10 x 18 Cm.
