Thonet: Classic Furniture in Bent Wood and Tubular Steel

£10.99

Product description

In Austria in the 19th century, Michael Thonet pioneered a radical innovation in the construction of furniture; bending first veneer bundles and then solid wood to make bent wood chairs and other furniture items. Thonet succeeded in refining the technique of bending wood to achieve the first large scale mass-production line; this was a key development in the history of furniture design, since it marked the transition form individual handmade pieces to industrially manufactured products.
Thonet also developed an international marketing network, so his light and elegant bent wood furniture proceeded to capture a large part of both the European and American markets. From 1920 onwards, Gebruder Thonet also began to manufacture tubular steel furniture, purchasing the best designs from leading architects and so being the first to manufacture many classic designs.
The beauty and simplicity of Thonet's furniture means that many designs, in both wood and tubular steel, are still manufactured today.
This book not only includes clearly illustrated information on dating items, but also details simple repair and restoration techniques. As the most comprehensive and definitive book on Thonet to date, it will undoubtedly be treasured by both collectors and all those who are interested in the development of furniture design.
