Virgo in Exile

£18.99

Product description

Sculptor, painter and writer, Sven Berlin was a forceful and controversial figure among the artists of St Ives in the 1940's and 1950's who went on to build a totally new career in and around the New Forest.
"Virgo in Exile" is an autobiographical account of the artist's life following his self-imposed exile from the magic but intense atmosphere of St Ives at the zenith of its reputation. The narrative forms a sequel to his first autobiographical volume "Coat of Many Colours". It opens with an account of the journey, by horse-drawn caravan, to the New Forest. It continues with an account of life among the gypsies and country-dwellers of the Forest. There follows the first real account of the writing of the book "Dark Monarch", withdrawn within days of its publication by Court Order and the crippling damage suffered by the author, both financial and to his standing in official art circles, from this very frank expose of the human side of the great and good of British art in the 1960's
