Whitehaven: An Illustrated History

£14.99

Product description

This third edition of a popular study of the evolution of Whitehaven, first published in 1966, has been so considerably expanded and improved by a mass of new material that it must be considered as an entirely new work. The text has been increased from 80,000 to 140,000 words, and the number of illustrations from the original ten to over one hundred and fifty. Particular attention has been paid to the achievements of the former Whitehaven Borough Council, and to post-war developments in local industry. A number of new biographical studies have been added to the chapter on local personalities. Three additional chapters look at the development of the hospital service; at Whitehaven's contribution to art, particularly at a hitherto unknown school of marine painters, and at the history of printing and bookselling.
The appendices have been expanded to include much material not otherwise easily accessible, but the book itself remains what it was originally designed to be - a most readable introduction to the history of a fascinating town that has had a far wider influence than is often realised.
