Hand-carved African soapstone chess set and board

£19.99

About this item

An unusual hand-carved chess set made from African soapstone, on solid board with inlaid tiles. The pieces are off-white and pale pink, the board's dark tiles showing non-identical patterns. The largest pieces (the Kings) are 7 cm in height, the smallest (the Pawns) just over 3 cm. The board measures 19 cm square and 5 cm in (uneven, hand-cut but smooth finish) thickness, weight 674gm.

The pieces are in a sturdy box, possibly not the original, measuring 20 x 12 x 4 cm.

The board has slight scratches on the non-playing (underneath) side, very small indentations to some tile edges (some unevenly laid). The playing pieces are in very good condition, with no discernable chips or markings.
