Vintage 1890's White Kid Leather Articulated Ball Gown Gloves

£34.99

Product description

Everywhere today you will find un-dressed hands, busying about: grasping, greeting, shaking and holding. All actions that we simply forget, however they hold a considerate amount of importance: building relationships, sealing a deal and bidding farewell. So why don't we give them the attention they deserve? Gloves are on trend, practical and suited to every occasion, so bring these gloves back into the limelight!

“ An object of luxury, elegance and refinement”- a snippet written about attitudes towards glove wearing, written in the 1800s. Ladies gloves in the 1800s were not only the height of fashion, but they up-held reputation and were a staple item in social scenarios to adhere to the correct etiquette expectations. There were many rules about when to wear gloves, how to wear gloves and were often involved in courtship rituals.

These Particular Gloves are crafted in a soft light kid leather, with a sheen on the outer and a smooth tactile finish on the inside for ease when wearing. They are 52 cm in length so create a dramatic aesthetic when worn and sit just above the elbow. On the reverse of the glove they fasten with three pearlised buttons at the wrist. On the inside they are labelled as a 6 1/2, palm circumference 14 cm.

One piece of writing from an etiquette guide published in the time wrote ‘Gloves should be worn by a lady when walking, driving, at tea dances, balls, dinner parties, opera or theatre. Men should wear gloves in the street, at a ball, when paying a call, driving, riding, or in church’. So gloves had a firm importance in day to day life, nowadays we lack the formalities of past eras, which makes the history and salvaged items hold much more importance. This exact pair of Articulated Ladies White Kid Leather gloves could have been worn to many a ball or dinner parties, just think of the stories they could tell, whether you are a avid collector, or are passionate about a bygone era, these would be perfect for you and a great talking point!
