Vintage circa 1890 Victorian Size M Mourning Cape with Crêpe and Sequin Detail

£225.00

Product description

This beautiful antique piece was worn around the 1890s, Victorian period, as a cape that would cover a mourning dress. The cape itself is very decorative and beautifully embellished with multiple layers of crepe and netting along with sequin and beading detail. These mourning ensembles would have been worn for up to 2 years after a death especially in the Victorian age when the fashion revolved heavily around the mourning queen herself. The tradition of all black ensembles would then be worn every day until it was seen as acceptable to begin half mourning. Which is way there is no surprise there is so much evidence of this Victorian mourning fashion around today.
The cape is made with layered Taffeta and crepe pleated around the entire cape, which layers up to the neck this has a sequin, net and bead decoration covering the shoulders. The cape is then finished with more layered crepe around the neck and down the front of the cape for even more decoration. It is fastened together using a black satin ribbon at the neck enclosed within a silk patterned lining, with a gathered panel around the bottom to create volume underneath the cape.
This piece has survived over 120 years very well however as expected it has been damaged slightly. The fabric has torn in several places on the taffeta, crepe and net but as it has been around for so long this is all part of the charm of this piece.
This item would be perfect for any antique fashion collector or historical re-enactor, who wants a genuine 1890s mourning cape straight from the period itself.
These pieces are extremely hard to come by and are unique in their own right, you won’t find one the same in any way, neither will you find a genuine relic from the period which is still wearable today.
