 I've worked with Oxfam since 2009, organising media campaigns and co-ordinating advocacy work, as well as leading our health care projects and acting as the lead for any issues related to women's rights.

In that time, I've been most proud of our work on gender justice, which has led to the abolition of a law that discriminated against pregnant women. The government were trying to cut pregnant women's social benefits, but after using online petitions and campaigning in rural areas, we were able to meet with representatives from the government, and as a result they stopped the process and restored the benefits.

Many farmers in Armenia struggle to make a living with extreme weather conditions and lack of storage facilities making it hard to preserve and market highly perishable crops. Oxfam has been supporting co-ops in places like Akhaghbyur where we’ve provided villagers with cold storage to help them increase the lifespan of their crops.

Oxfam has been supporting co-ops in places like Akhaghbyur where we’ve provided villagers with cold storage to help them increase the lifespan of their crops.
  • Our work with rural communities has also included providing livestock to families to as a means of developing their livelihoods. Here Assia Temanyan makes cheese using milk from the cow she and her husband received from Oxfam in 2009. The animal has provided milk, butter, cheese and some crucial income for the family ever since.
  • Armenia's state health care has suffered from both corruption and severe under-funding for years, leaving many communities without access to basic services such as essential drugs and trained health workers. Oxfam's health care programme includes community-based health schemes in rural villages. Here, Naira Stepanyan takes part in a screening.
  • Providing training to people living in remote and disadvantaged communities is another important part of Oxfam's work. Here, Lena Yedigaryan uses the computer at an Oxfam supported civic centre. "Before, we were isolated and unable to participate in community life. With the skills I've acquired from this civic centre, I now provide training to young people on using computers."

The impact of our work

 We've undergone marketing training and lessons in how to manage the co-operative. We learnt how to tend the trees when they are saplings, and what to do if they get diseases. We even get the latest prices from the supermarket sent to our mobile phones by SMS.
