 I help women and young people raise their voices and demand respect for their rights. Historically, both groups and have been excluded from national development in Honduras, so we promote processes that enable them to participate in society and encourage a more inclusive democracy. In this way, it's possible to begin to reduce economic inequality and gender inequality, too. For me, the most rewarding part of this struggle is seeing that our campaigns can truly change ideas, beliefs and the ways people act.

  • Marina Cruz embroiders a coffee bag at the Dalias del Campo roasting plant in Sessesmil. With support from Oxfam, six entrepreneurial women are working alongside the local coffee farmers to run their own successful local roasting business. Using up to 20% of the harvest, Marina’s group now roast and package organic coffee for the tourist market in Copan Runias.
  • Here Osmin Guerre turns the coffee beans in the solar drying green house at Sesemil. With support from Oxfam’s partner the Christian Organisation for Development, this rural community have transformed themselves from conventional farmers to international coffee traders. Certified as organic and fair trade, they are guaranteed a higher price for their coffee and are no longer at the mercy of the fluctuating Honduran coffee market.
  • As weather patterns become more unpredictable Oxfam is working with local communities to help them adapt and safeguard their means of making a living. Beekeeper German Garcia Lara has found it increasingly difficult to find enough nectar for his bees. With new training he is now feeding them artificially with sugar and planting different flowering plants in the hope of producing enough nectar.
  • Marcelo Galdamez was selected by Oxfam to receive a cow as part of our work to support small-scale farmers. “We are really happy to receive this cow – it is something we have dreamed about. We sell some milk and are planning to sell the cheese. We use the money to buy things like sugar and cooking oil. We also use the manure in our garden.

The impact of our work

 Oxfam has really helped us - I never imagined that I'd be able to do all this. Because of the training and now the irrigation, we can sell cabbage all year round. We sell at the local market every Sunday. We used to only eat corn and beans, now with the extra money we have we can eat more varied food and my children are healthier.
