Oxfam in Nicaragua

Sonia Cano, Country Director

 I've been with Oxfam for 16 years, and lead our work to ensure long-lasting changes occur in the lives of people who are poor, excluded or discriminated against. My job involves ensuring we achieve what we set out to achieve, and that our programmes are properly monitored and evaluated. I'm also responsible for developing our staff, and for making sure women can participate in our work.

Recently, I visited an area of the Caribbean Coast, where we've worked with people who are forgetting their ancient differences to raise a single voice and engage in dialogue with leaders in their territories. This sort of progress makes me really proud.

The largest country in Central America, Nicaragua is regularly affected by tropical storms and hurricanes. Oxfam works with communities in the west and along the Caribbean coast to be prepared for, and better able to cope with, natural disasters.   • Supporting small-scale farmers, especially women, is another big focus of our work in Nicaragua. Here, Ana Maria Sanchez collects chaya from her farm. Ana received a loan from Oxfam partner INPRHU to help her invest in growing and selling more produce.
  • We also work with producers' associations to help them develop their skills and learn how to best market their products. Here, women from the Solcafe co-operative rake coffee beans out to dry. With Oxfam's support the group have achieved Fair Trade certification for their organic coffee.

The impact of our work

 Now we are a group. We are better trained and have a network of contacts with other rural business owners who can teach us what we need for our business to succeed. Now we are more self-confident and eager to move forward.
