 I work in the education programme, joining with local partners on school building projects, strengthening links with the Ministry of Education, pushing for policy changes and - a source of particular pride - supporting people as they set up school canteens.

These help to improve pupils' health and push up attendance rates, and because communities are also taking part-ownership of the canteens, it means that people can use the food they grow and therefore earn an income. The Ministry is so impressed with the canteens that it's currently looking into expanding the scheme."

Ensuring children are able to go to school is an important part of our work in Niger.   • Recurrent drought has seen Niger suffer a number of food crises in recent years. We work with communities to help them improve their means of making a living and be better able to cope with an increasingly unpredictable climate. Here, Oxfam Project Officer Weifane Ibrahim talks to women collecting water in Kakassi.
  • We also support projects to train women in organic farming techniques, including rainwater harvesting and planting drought-resistant seeds, so that they're able to grow enough food to support themselves and their families. Here, a woman tends to the vegetables at the Oxfam-supported Bani Bangou Garden.
  • Being prepared for, and responding to, emergencies is another important element of our work in Niger. During the West Africa Food Crisis of 2005 we organised emergency food distributions that provided an immediate source of food for the poorest communities. These also helped reduce the market price of grain, making it more affordable for others.

The impact of our work

 This [voucher distribution] is a big help for my family. We can't earn our own living. Normally we beg on the streets. Sometimes we get help, sometimes not. There are days when we have nothing to eat at all. Today I'm going to buy rice with these vouchers."
