 The thing I most enjoy about my role is working with others. For me, this can involve everything from travelling to Oxfam's projects to make sure things are working well, to monitoring and supporting the staff of partner organisations. Oxfam works with a range of partners in the occupied Palestinian Territory - large organisations like the World Food Programme and the European Commission, and smaller, local organisations too. We've got excellent relations with various grassroots organisations, which is really important, especially in the current challenging context and when there are many people in need of support.

In the Gaza Strip, where the water and sanitation system is on the verge of collapse, our work includes working in kindergartens to teach children about safe hygiene through puppet shows, story-telling, drama and painting. We also run income-generation programmes for families and advocate for the lifting of the blockade.

  • In the Gaza Strip, where the water and sanitation system is on the verge of collapse, our work includes working in kindergartens to teach children about safe hygiene through puppet shows, story-telling, drama and painting. We also run income-generation programmes for families and advocate for the lifting of the blockade.
  • More than 100,000 Palestinians rely on olive farming as their primary source of income. Oxfam works with co-operatives to help them become self sufficient by providing technical support and training on marketing and financial management. We also offer women's co-operatives like this one in Sir with interest free loans so they can invest in their produce.
  • Abu Nasser is a member of the Beni Zeid Co-operative for Organic Olive Oil Production. Supported by Oxfam, they have now exported more than 70 tons of Fairtrade oil that is organically certified. "This collective way of working really helps me. When we are pooling our harvest we can press everyday and our oil is higher quality."
  • In Israel, our partners seek to promote a just and sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians by working for a fairer society. We also aim to change perceptions and increase awareness and understanding of the conflict's impact. Here, Ella reads a Hebrew leaflet about fair trade at a festival in Lod, one of Israel's poorest towns.
  • The Achoti Fair Trade Shop in Tel Aviv sells locally produced Fair Trade items produced by women’s co-operatives in Israel and throughout the West Bank. Oxfam has been working with Palestinian farmers to help them increase the quality of their olive oil and gain the certification needed to sell their produce in shops like this.

The impact of our work

 We are business women but we still focus on our family, so people see we can do both. We are using the extra income to send our children to university and improve their opportunities.
