More than a million refugees have fled violence in Syria since March 2011. Find out how Oxfam and its partners are helping Syrian families in Jordan and Lebanon, and please donate to the Syria Crisis Appeal so that Oxfam can reach up to 120,000 people in desparate need of shelter, food and water.

More than a million people are thought to have fled Syria since the onset of fighting in March 2011. In Jaleel refugee camp (pictured), the oldest Palestinian camp in Lebanon, the population has more than doubled with the arrival of Syrian refugees. Oxfam partner 'The Children of Al Jaleel' is providing support to people sheltering in the camp.

  • More than a million people are thought to have fled Syria since the onset of fighting in March 2011. In Jaleel refugee camp (pictured), the oldest Palestinian camp in Lebanon, the population has more than doubled with the arrival of Syrian refugees. Oxfam partner 'The Children of Al Jaleel' is providing support to people sheltering in the camp.
  • Oxfam is also working in Za'atari refugee camp in Jordan - providing people with access to water and sanitation, and coordinating hygiene training to prevent the spread of life-threatening diseases.
  • Samira lives in a self-made shelter with just one room which she shares with 12 other people. “We decided to come to Lebanon because of the fighting that was taking place," she explains. "The shelling and the shooting were happening whilst we were trying to live peacefully in our homes. It has been eight months since I left my home, I have no idea what happened to it we just had to leave it behind and escaped because of the fighting.”
  • Hanin Handan and her husband lost everything they owned when their home in Damascus burned down. “All of our food is from food distributions, we have no money for food as we lost everything when our house burned down," she told us. "We used to have a good life, my husband had a good job rearing chickens and we were happy. Now we have nothing left.”
  • Hanin and her husband received an oil heater as part of an Oxfam-funded distribution through our local partner organisation ‘The Children of Al Jaleel'. “With a heater everything is different. We can all stay warm and I don’t have to worry so much about my son and think that he might get sick.” Hanin says.
  • Oxfam's Syria crisis response also includes constructing tap stands and water tanks to provide clean water to refugees in Jordan's Za'atari camp. At the start of March we were reaching around 10,750 people sheltering in the camp.
  • Here, in Beirut, staff from Oxfam's local partner, PARD NDG, prepare for a food and hygiene distribution. Each family taking part in the distribution is given a voucher for US$70 to allow them to purchase items they need most.
  • Oxfam is also building sanitation facilities for refugees from Syria. Here in Za'atari camp, staff begin the process of laying cement for bathroom blocks. Oxfam is installing toilets, showers, laundry areas and ablution areas in the camp.

  • Oxfam partner PARD is also distributing blankets to families who have fled the conflict in Syria. Tens of thousands of vulnerable refugees sheltering in camps in Lebanon and Jordan faced winter in tents without heat or adequate access to other basic needs.
