Zambia: Education for orphans

Who will benefit?

18,000 pupils at 25 community schools will benefit from higher quality education

100 teachers will receive training towards a formal qualification

Community schools are a lifeline for one million Zambian children whose families cannot afford to send them to government schools. With your support Oxfam is working in three provinces to ensure children get the quality education they deserve.

Zambia has one of the highest HIV infection rates in sub-Saharan Africa and almost two-thirds of the population live below the poverty line. Many children whose parents have died or need care can only get an education at community schools run by local volunteers, mostly lacking training or resources. With your support, this project will enable these schools to deliver quality education and claim the government help that will let them keep doing so year on year.

About the project

Oxfam has three established partners in this project, working in Copperbelt, Western and Lusaka Provinces. Building on successes raising attendance and exam results since 2003, this project will improve the resources of community schools, equip school communities to hold the Government accountable for education, and lobby the Government for better education for orphans and vulnerable children.

How we are helping

This project has brought a clean water supply to my school for the first time. Before, we used to have to go to neighbouring farms to ask for water whenever we needed a drink.

Project aims

  • Raise teaching standards by supporting teachers to gain formal qualifications.

  • Improve classrooms and water and sanitation facilities in schools by building toilets and water points, and providing desks and educational materials.

  • Support school committees to lobby the government to improve education and involve the local community in running and supporting schools.

  • Raise awareness of HIV and AIDS and the importance of education for orphans and vulnerable children, by broadcasting radio programmes and running after-school clubs.
