Oxfam response to the resumption of South Sudan Peace talks

In response to the resumption of South Sudan peace talks led by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Oxfam South Sudan Country Director Tariq Riebl said:

"We welcome the resumption of the peace talks, this is a chance for the rival leaders Kiir and Machar to swiftly turn the tide away from conflict and find a just and sustainable political solution.

"The member states of IGAD and the international community need to work together to ensure these talks yield meaningful results and that both parties to the conflict commit to laying down their arms. Both parties must show a firm and genuine commitment to a process that urgently needs to deliver a permanent ceasefire, and a road map that will lead to a transitional government of national unity. Every effort needs to be made to ensure that the voices of the diverse communities in South Sudan are heard during negotiations.

"Equally, as South Sudan sits on the brink of famine the international community needs to do everything it can to support this young nation to urgently scale up the humanitarian response to save lives, protect people, and to end the bloodshed and suffering."
