Get Together for International Women's Day this March

22nd Feb 2013

Women farmers in Nepal

If you follow us on Twitter you'll already know that we're pretty excited about the fantastic Oxfam Get Togethers being planned for International Women's Day. From a cabaret and film night in Kings Cross to an exclusive event hosted by the Mayor of Ipswich, our supporters in the South East are getting creative in support of universal gender equality.

Already in its third year, Oxfam's popular Get Togethers encourage men and women around the UK to hold events to help raise awareness for the millions of women around the world still battling inequality.

So, the question is - do you want to hold your own Get Together? Or, do you want to attend one of the exciting events being put on by some awesome organisations in the South East? Lucky for you, there are loads of options!

For inspiration to host your own event, look no further than Alice from Brighton who held a lovers-themed Get Together in a local bar. Her Grandma, school friends and local Councillor enjoyed home-made cakes and bought Valentines cards designed especially for the event. As the night drew to a close some guests even participated in what we've heard was a successful round of speed dating.

If you happen to be particularly well connected you could host a Get Together in your parlour like the Mayor of Ipswich did last week. Cementing her commitment to women's rights, Mary Blake hosted an exemplary event that put International Women's Day on the agenda of some of Suffolk's most influential individuals.

Hundreds of people in our region have also already organised Get Togethers that you're all invited to! Whether you're into comedy or poetry, champagne or coffee, someone in the South East's got it covered. In Kings Cross the Youth Media Agency are holding a cabaret and film night, and the Brixton team are inviting locals to mingle over cocktails, cakes and a raffle. There's a huge event being held in Greenwich where bestselling authors and award winning comedians are getting together to celebrate International Women's Day in style. And finally, in Tunbridge Wells, our very own Lana Peswani will give a talk in Relish about women's rights while guests enjoy coffee and cakes. See below for details for all the mentioned events.

We hope this blog post has inspired you to get involved with this year's Get Togethers. There's still time to plan your own (click here for a Get Together pack) and don't forget to let us know your plans so we can help you promote the event. Good luck and we'll see you at as many events as we can make it to!
