Shop Support Volunteer (Oxfam House)

Context:

With over 600 shops and thousands of volunteers, Oxfam is a major presence on the high street, raising vital funds for people living in poverty. You will have the opportunity to support the hardworking shop teams.

This role offer a great opportunity to gain an insight into the retail operation of a major charity whilst honing your customer service skills.

The Shop Support Team helps shops to find solutions to their queries through an efficient one-stop service by either telephone or email.  We also answer questions from the public, helping shops maintain high levels of customer service and promoting their business.

You will be working in a busy office with a mix of staff and other volunteers who are all passionate about helping shops to raise money to overcome poverty and suffering.

Ideally you will be able to volunteer at least one day a week for a minimum period of three months. If you are available on Fridays, that will be particularly helpful although we welcome applications for any day.

Key responsibilities:

  • Working as part of a team to provide a friendly and helpful service to Oxfam shops and other departments.
  • Answering email and telephone queries in a clear and positive way.
  • Browsing for information on a computer.
  • Dealing with a range of issues of varying complexity.
  • Working with colleagues to support shops to make decisions.
  • Communicating with other departments within Oxfam.

Skills and competencies:

You will receive full training and guidance but the following skills will be useful:

  • Confident speaking on the phone
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
  • Confidence using the computer, including ability to use email and browse the internet.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office would be advantageous, particularly Word and Excel .
  • The ability to prioritise and manage workload effectively
  • Enthusiasm to be part of a team and assist team members as required
  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Able to use initiative and solve problems
