In reaction to commitments made by G8 Foreign Ministers to address the issue of sexual violence in conflict, Oxfam acting-CEO, Penny Lawrence said:
"We welcome the G8's commitment to addressing the issue of sexual violence in conflict and putting the issue firmly on the global agenda.
Women worldwide suffer unimaginable violence as a result of persistent inequalities and beliefs that leave them exposed to appalling abuses often committed within a culture of impunity that leaves the perpetrators free.
Much more investment is needed to improve the police, security and justice systems that are designed to protect women and girls, but so often fail to do so.
As we saw in India real change needs huge effort from governments not just to pass laws, but to make sure they are put into action. This means working on the ground with people and communities, to alter social norms, attitudes and beliefs.
We now look forward to the Secretary of State for Development's proposed summit in the autumn, where we hope to see an ambitious and realistic agenda set to prevent, as well as respond to, violence against women and girls."
