Oxfam response to another Lord's Lobbying Bill defeat for the Government

21st Jan 2014

Responding to the Government's second Lords defeat in a week over Part 2 of the Lobbying Bill, Mark Goldring, Oxfam Chief Executive, said:

"This is a victory for democracy. The Government should listen to the Lords and accept their two amendments which will protect the right of charities and others to speak out on issues of public concern.

"Peers today have struck an important blow for grassroots organisations who should be free to campaign on local issues of concern and for common sense. The Government's wide-ranging constituency spending limits would have been unworkable."

Notes to editors: Lords last week passed an amendment to remove most staff costs from spending limits contained in the Bill.
