Superstar DJ Fatboy Slim kicks off this year's 10th birthday celebrations of Oxjam music festival with an intimate gig in the Dalston Oxfam shop next month.
The DJ will be returning to where he played at the first big-name Oxfam shop gig for Oxjam, with records, clothes, books and hardware moving from the shop, to make way for a stage and speakers to create an extra special music venue on 3 October.
The gig will launch Oxjam Music Festival where hundreds of gigs of every size and genre imaginable will take place across the UK throughout October. The events are organised by volunteers to showcase the best local bands and musical talent to raise money for Oxfam's work to end poverty. Some 2,500 musicians are expected to play to more than 100,000 people.
Fatboy Slim said: "I'm delighted to be playing at Oxjam's tenth birthday. The festival is an amazing opportunity for local bands and gig organisers to raise the profile of local talent and by doing so help people fight poverty. October is set to be a musical month to remember thanks to Oxjam."
Hosting Oxjam launch parties is part of the Dalston Oxfam shop's heritage. Over the past decade, the shop has featured the biggest names in the UK music scene, including The Kooks, Jarvis Cocker, Damon Albarn, Skream, Four Tet, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, 2manydjs, and Ghostpoet. Tickets to see Fatboy Slim are already sold out.
Since it started 10 years ago, more than a million people have been to an Oxjam gig, helping to raise more than £2.5 million - that's enough money to supply fresh water to 2.5 million people, or the population of Greater Manchester, one of the largest metropolitan districts in the UK.
Indie rock band Mystery Jets are supporting Oxjam by selecting and spinning vinyl, signing records and posing with fans for photos at Oxfam shops in Leicester, Preston, Newcastle, Edinburgh Cambridge. They will also be performing at the Reading shop and there will be opportunities to win tickets to their gigs throughout the Oxfam shop tour between 29 September to 12 October.
Mystery Jets said: "We're super excited to be running an Oxfam Shop Tour. For us an Oxfam shop is the 'go-to' place to get our vinyl and find new inspiration for our tracks. Oxfam shop music selections are unlike other music shops, in that you never quite know what diamonds you might find in each shop. We'd love for fans to get involved in our Oxfam Shop Tour by coming down to the shops to see us."
Oxjam's Manager Sandy Trappitt said: "For ten years Oxjam has been an exciting opportunity for music-lovers to come together and share their passion for all sorts of music while at the same time supporting Oxfam's fight to end poverty. It's something to celebrate and a chance to thank all those involved."
