Reaction to Angus MacNeil MP's Refugee Family Reunion Bill

14th Jul 2017

Commenting on Angus MacNeil MP's decision to present a Private Members Bill that would help refugee families to reunite in the UK, Josephine Liebl, Humanitarian Policy Advisor at Oxfam, said:

"We're very pleased Angus MacNeil is presenting this Bill that will bring the plight of refugee families to the attention of Parliament. Many refugees who are given protection in the UK have no hope of bringing their loved ones here to join them due to restrictive rules. By keeping families apart, our current system only prolongs the suffering of people who have already been through so much. We have the opportunity to help refugees live fuller lives with their families in the UK and to offer a lifeline to those still in peril."

Oxfam has been campaigning for a change to the rules governing refugee family reunion along with the British Refugee Council, British Red Cross and Amnesty International. The recommendations of these organisations were outlined in a report in February 2017 called Together Again: reuniting refugee families in safety.
