Reaction: Number of forcibly displaced people rises above 68 million

19th Jun 2018

In response to the UN Refugee Agency's announcement that the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide has risen above 68 million, Oxfam's Head of Humanitarian Advocacy and Campaigns Fionna Smyth said:

"Behind this grim statistic are ordinary women, men and children wrenched from their homes. Yet another new record number shows that this is a crisis that is not going away.

"Developing countries continue to host the vast majority of people displaced by war and persecution, while we fear that wealthier countries are closing ranks and closing borders.

"World leaders have an opportunity this September to agree on a mechanism for sharing responsibility more fairly. The UK should back this process, and can start by making it easier for refugees to reunite with their families here."
