A Dictionary Of The English Language by Robert Gordon Latham Founded On That Of Dr. Samuel Johnson As Edited By The Rev H. J. Todd, M.A. With Numerous Emendations And Additions
First Edition, 1866 and 1870
We have a very rare 1st Edition set of this work. It was published in two volumes, and each volume comes in two parts.
Volume 1, Part 1, published 1866, ABA-CYT
Volume 1, Part 2, published 1866, DAB-IVY, together 1300 pages with extensive introduction.
Volume 2, Part 1, published 1870, JAB-QUO
Volume 2, Part 2, published 1870, RAB-ZYM, together 1436 pages.
All four parts are bound in a light tan leather, with gilt lettering and decoration, and on the spine five raised bands with again gilt lettering on red and green blocks. The book edges and endpapers are decorated with a still bright marbling. The pages themselves are clean and tight. There is some foxing, but this is mostly confined to the first and last dozen or so pages of each volume. Each book measures approximately 28 x 24 x 6 cm.
There is one problem with these books. Over time the covers have become detached from all four volumes. There has at some point been a repair made to the two parts of volume two, but if you do purchase these books they will need some restoration or repair. As mentioned however the pages are themselves in remarkably good condition for their age, it is only the covers that need attention.
When restored, these rare books would make a marvellous addition to any book collectors library.
