A History of British Birds: The Figures Engraved on Wood by T. Bewick - Volumes I and II

£500.00

Product description

Two volumes. Volume I, "Containing the History and Description of Land Birds". Volume II, "Containing the History and Description of Water Birds".

Volume I published 1816, Sixth Impression. Volume II published 1804, FIRST EDITION. Both published by Edward Walker, Newcastle.

Both volumes have been rebound in sturdy dark and light brown leather boards at an unknown date. Titles gold on red. Embossed with date of publications. Some minor knocks and wear around edges of covers.

Volume I has been rebound but contains all the original pages in original condition - no repairs. There is mottling on some pages but this is superficial damage only - pages are generally in very good condition and there is only one rip in the whole book. Pages are yellowed as one would expect of a book this age, but all words and prints fine. Patterning on edge of pages is worn but still visible in places. Sticker of previous owner on inside cover.

Volume II has been rebound and around two dozen pages have been strengthened/repaired. The first few pages, including the title page/frontispiece, have been heavily repaired but are still fully readable. Pages 201-216 and 221-222 are non-original (possibly put in when the book was rebound), printed on white card. The large bulk of pages are original and uncut, bearing the faded colour expected of a book this age. There is an archaic ink inscription at the front.

Overall these are nice copies, despite some repairs. Having been rebound, both volumes are very sturdy and in no danger of falling apart. Volume I feels very original aside from the first few pages. Volume II feels a lot older, despite the repairs and unoriginal pages. A good copy of this famous and rare work that would grace any collection.
