A New Thing; Incidents of Missionary Life in China

£290.00

Product description

A New Thing; Incidents of Missionary Life in China - F.M. Williams
London. S. W. Partridge & Co. First edition 1895. pp 429. Author signed dedication.

Very sturdy blue cloth boards with classy gilt and black images of lake and mountain scenery, pagoda and lovely orchids; and there is a quote from Isiah 63.19. Gilt lettering to spine.
Corners are good, hinges and spine ends a little frayed and bumped.

Nice pencil dedication on title page: "Dorothy Griffith with best wishes from F. M. Williams - Sept. 10th 1919" spoilt by adjacent red felt tip old price.

There is a good A4 sized fold-out map of China showing the Stations of the China Inland Mission, and in the corner a map of England drawn to the same scale, with London and the Thames clearly (and pointlessly) indicated. The map has a clean 4cm tear that threatens Formosa.

Introduction by Rev. J. Elder Cumming, D. D. and dedication to his God-children and all the children connected with the Bath Railway Mission.

The text block is of course tanned and there is some foxing. Block is rough cut but the paper is very fine - almost onion skin grade. 419 pages on the author's experiences in China with lots of vintage plates and verses telling of the good word. Heavy-going gazette at back.

This is a very rare book, full of touching anecdotes about China before Mao.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
